Preview: Screening for Substance Use Disorder

Brett Snodgrass: Hi, my name is Brett Snodgrass. I'm a family nurse practitioner in Memphis, Tennessee, Director of Operations for Baptist Health Systems Palliative Medicine Program. And I'm looking forward to spending some time with you and talking about digging deeper and talking about the substance use disorder screening, how to do it in primary care, when to do it. So we're going to take some time to go over really how we appropriately screen our patients. If the last 10 to 15 years has taught us anything, it's the fact that patients come to us in many walks of life with many issues ongoing. And one thing we do need to really be thinking about in our patient populations is substance use disorder. You can't always pick it out from how a patient looks, but it's really important that you universally be screening your patients.

So we're going to spend some time talking about how we screen our patients—when do we do it—and we're going to start the day and start the time out looking at really substance use disorder and the history of it. I think that's really important how we got to where we are. So we'll be looking at that. We'll be talking about how we screen our patients appropriately. And then finally, what happens when a patient does screen positive? What then? So we will be talking about a lot of things, and I want to really make it easy, and I want you to have nuggets that you can take back to your practice the day after you attend.
