Demise of the Traditional Syringe and Rise of the Smart Syringe System

An innovative computer-controlled injection system for epidural space location and confirmation, recently cleared by the FDA, can provide immediate feedback about the epidural needle position in tissues, in addition to its ability to electronically fine-tune the flow rate and the amount of fluid delivered. Mark Hochman, DDS, the lead inventor of this instrument, explains that the disposable tubing set contains a pressure sensor that can determine the densities of tissues it is passing through and can document the pressures and the successful location and confirmation of the epidural needle in the epidural space.
