Mitigating Cardiovascular Risk Factors

In this Practical Updates in Primary Care 2023 Virtual Series session, Chuck Vega, MD, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of California Irvine and Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, the Director of Mount Sinai Heart and the Dr Valentin Fuster Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Health System describe how certain lifestyle modifications and drug therapies can potentially minimize the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Dr Vega began the session with an overview of the prevalence, burden, and risk factors associated with CVD, noting that one in five deaths are due to CVD, making it the number one cause of death in the United States.

Dr Vega then examined the safety and efficacy of existing strategies to mitigate CVD risk, including polling the audience on their use of cardiovascular risk tools as well as reviewing CVD prediction tools like the Framingham Risk Score, the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation and the QRISK prediction tool. Next, Dr Vega reviewed lipid metabolism and the types of dyslipidemia as well as reviewed case studies on the topic.

Dr Bhatt concluded the session with a review of the most recent data associated with “healthy fats” like omega-3 fatty acids, including their formulations, mechanisms of action, biological effects, and clinical implications in CVD risk.
