Editor’s Note - October 2015

“Type 2 diabetes is a manmade problem. We can prevent it,” said Tim Church, MD, as he kicked off the 2015 Cardiometabolic Risk Summit held in Las Vegas last month.

Powered by Consultant, CRS Fall focused on a team-approach to treating cardiometabolic risk—which encompasses diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. This disease state affects more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States and primary care practitioners are increasingly playing key roles in the diagnoses and treatment of these patients.

Consultant360 recently highlighted several articles focused on cardiometabolic risk:

Metformin works in the gut. New research finds that the glucose-lowering drug, metformin, primarily takes effect within the gut and not within the bloodstream.1

Daily soda consumption negatively impacts cardiovascular health. A new review reports that daily consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a 35% increased risk of heart attack or fatal heart disease, a 26% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and a 16% increased risk of stroke.2

Vitamin C may be a lifestyle strategy for the obese. A new study finds that vitamin C supplements could be as effective as exercise as a lifestyle strategy for overweight and obese adult patients.3

Certain fruits and vegetables are better for weight loss. A study found that increased intake of fruits with higher fiber content or lower glycemic load and nonstarchy vegetables is more strongly associated with a healthy weight.4
