Presentations of Uveal Melanoma

  • This short slideshow illustrates different types of uveal melanoma cases featured in the Consultant archives. Each slide links to the full case report for more details.

  • Cutaneous Metastasis of Uveal Melanoma

A 65-year-old man presented to a dermatology clinic with a 1-week history of 2 new scalp lesions. He denied any associated pruritus or bleeding.

He had a medical history significant for hypertension and uveal melanoma with recent metastasis to the liver. His liver lesions were treated with microwave thermal ablation. The patient had been receiving carboplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy for 3 months.

  • Uveal Melanoma

Approximately 1 week after having been shot in the left eye with a foam dart from a toy gun, a 37-year-old woman presented to an optometrist due to persistent pain in the eye. The patient received a diagnosis of iritis with trace flare of the left eye and was treated with prednisolone acetate ophthalmic drops, 1%, 1 drop in the left eye 4 times daily for 1 week, then 1 drop 3 times daily for 3 days, then 1 drop twice daily for 3 days, then 1 drop daily for 3 days, and then discontinued.

The patient had a known history of a benign nevus of the right iris. During the eye examination, the optometrist, who had been following the patient’s case, noted that the nevus was brown and circumscribed with a flat anterior contour, but it appeared to have enlarged.

  • Man With an Intraocular Mass

A 53-year-old man presents for evaluation of an intraocular mass in his right eye. One month earlier he had tripped over a space heater and hit his forehead on a countertop. At that time he was treated in an urgent care clinic for a laceration on his left forehead.

Because he had a persistent chronic headache after his head trauma, he followed up with his family physician. The physician ordered a computerized tomography scan of the head, which revealed a large, dense, homogenous mass in the right eye.
